Maybe it’s the title of the movie, maybe it’s the setting, maybe it’s because I knew nothing about Parasite before going in, but I was expecting a horror movie. And it is. In a way.
This is one of those movies where you should know as little as possible going in. It’s about family. It’s about culture. It’s about class systems and it’s about relationships. It’s a tightly knit film with all the story threads running along weaving itself inside and out until it finally gets to the climax. Parasite is a reminder of what movies can be, regardless of the language that it’s in or the country it comes from. Parasite shifts gears effortlessly from family comedy, to heist caper, to thriller, to family drama, back and forth, keeping the audience constantly at the edge of their seats.
Should Parasite win best picture over some of the other nominees? I don’t know. But it would be a great message of inclusivity and acceptance by the Academy and its members if it did.
On merit, Parasite definitely deserves to win. But it’ll be hard to see if it has any real chance in this Hollywood.
