WandaVision Explained: All the Easter Eggs in Episode 9

Wow. We think that was as perfect a finale to WandaVision as we could have expected. We got magic and mayhem. We got Rockem Sockem Robots. We got Skrulls. We got The Scarlet Witch! What the hell is “The Ship of Theseus?” Was that an “M” atop her headpiece? Did no one turn out to be Mephisto?

We answer all of your questions…

The events of WandaVision come to a head, and the destinies of all who took part are determined.

Just How Powerful is Wanda?

1. This really is the biggest question of the series. There was a lot of talk as to whether or not WandaVision would set up The Scarlet Witch as the big bad of Phase 4, but given what happened in this finale, it’s clear that Wanda is still a hero at heart. Once she realized just what she had been doing to the residents of Westview, she immediately sacrificed her own perfect life to set them free.

2. As for just how powerful Wanda is? We’ve seen her singlehandedly take on Thanos in Avengers: Endgame and almost win. And as Agatha says in this episode:

Your power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme.

3. Agatha also says that it is Wanda’s “destiny to destroy the world.” Which could mean that her narrative arc in Phase 4 is all about fighting that destiny and the struggle not to heed to her greater demons. (Heh. Demons. Geddit?)

4. Remember that throughout this series, Wanda hasn’t been creating an illusion but rather another version of reality. This means that once she hones her ability to wield Chaos Magic, she’ll be able to bend reality and all of existence to her will.

5. Agatha will be back. We’re pretty sure about that. Given her connection to Wanda in the comics, it seems like she’s being set-up to be more than just the villain of this piece. While it’s true that she did want all of the Scarlet Witch’s power for herself, it also seemed like she was trying to stop Wanda from destroying the world.

6. When a greater evil eventually reveals itself in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the Scarlet Witch and the Sorcerer Supreme might have to turn to Agatha for help.

7. What’s more, given that we’re now living in the Hahnaissance era, it would be a real surprise if Marvel didn’t make the most of Kathryn Hahn’s popularity and bring her back in as many things as possible.

Where Did White Vision Go?

8. We don’t know really. It looks like he flew off to process all of this new information that Westview Vision put back into his brain.

9. The resolution of the White Vision storyline in the comics is a little more complex. When we first meet White Vision in The West Coast Avengers #45, he is a blank shell of the man/synthezoid he once was. Insisting that he isn’t the “Vision” that Wanda fell in love with, their marriage is annulled, and the both of them end up like those awkward co-workers who once dated but still have to work together.
   
10. Over time, White Vision too begins to feel like a real boy and wants to transition back into his old self. With the help of a scientist, Miles Lipton, and by using a holographic projector, White Vision disguises himself as a human, Victor Shade, in order to mingle with humanity to learn more about their ways. When it is later discovered that White Vision still needs human brain patterns to function, Dr. Lipton endows him with the brain engrams of his late son, Alex, giving him the ability for emotional growth.
    
11. He fights another Vision (the Anti-Vision) from a parallel Earth.

12. He dates Carol Danvers for a bit. (They go jet-skiing!).

13. But in the end, despite being restored to his previous self, both Vision and Wanda move on with their respective lives, their love story over for good.

What Happened to Billy and Tommy?

14. This is also a rather complicated question. If we use the comics as a point of reference, then the original Billy and Tommy were magical constructs, created by Wanda Maximoff using slivers of the demon’s Mephisto’s life force. Once their true nature was discovered, they were were disposed of by Agatha Harkness, who also erased Wanda’s memory of them.

15. Many years later, the boys were reincarnated into the bodies of Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd. They weren’t the original Billy and Tommy, and their relationship to Wanda was most definitely strained.

16. During the post-credits tag of WandaVision, however, we are led to believe that Billy and Tommy are alive but trapped in another dimension (?). When we see Wanda studying/manipulating the Darkhold, we hear Billy and Tommy’s voices:

Billy: Mom, help! Mom, please!
Tommy: Help! Mom, please!

17. Are they in the infamous Dark Dimension? Would Vision be trapped there as well?

Other Easter Eggs and Wild Speculations

18. This is just a great Wizard of Oz reference!

19. Just how and when did Agent Woo get detained and handcuffed by S.W.O.R.D.? The last time we saw him was in Episode 7 of WandaVision, just before Monica pushes her way into “the hex.” We guess the S.W.O.R.D. agents must have found him in between episodes.

20. Looks like Agent Woo has been practicing more than just his card tricks!

21. Look kids, it’s the Elder God Chthon who, in the comics, would possess Wanda’s body and use it as his vessel on Earth. He is also the author of the Darkhold.

22. Listen, you know we couldn’t do an explainer article without at least one of these. So here goes. Is M&B a reference to Mephisto and his son Blackheart? No? We’re still grasping? Fine. Be like that.

23. Sorry, but did Marvel just cast Evan Peters to troll fans and set us up for a really unnecessary “boner” joke? Looks like it.

24. This moment, when Vision and the kids are dematerializing is a visual callback to one of the greatest comic book covers of all time, the House of M #1 variant by Joe Quesada.

25. That poster in the background reads: “THE LIBRARY IS THE PLACE TO BEE.” We still don’t know why the S.W.O.R.D. agent in Episode 2 showed up as a beekeeper. Are these hints that the possible return of A.I.M.?

26. This was also not the first time that Vision has indulged in a little philosophizing by utilizing the Ship of Theseus thought experiment. That conversation first took place in The Avengers #6 (2017) by Mark Waid and Mike del Mundo.

27. Since Monica’s powers came from “the hex,” which in turn was a consequence of Wanda’s manipulations, who just happens to have a piece of the Mind Stone inside her, it makes sense that her eyes would be glowing yellow.

28. We also see a different manifestation of Monica’s powers. When she leaps in front of the children and is shot by Hayward, we see the bullets pass through her and have their kinetic energy reduced before falling to the ground.

29. We also got a callback to Avengers: Age of Ultron. We haven’t seen Wanda move like this, or use her powers in this way, since that movie.

30. You tell us that doesn’t look like Magneto’s helmet!

31. We think that the Skrull agent in the mid-credits tag is referring to Nick Fury. We know that he is indeed an old friend of her mother’s (see: Captain Marvel). And when we last saw him (in Spider-Man: Far From Home) he was “vacationing” aboard what looked like a Skrull space station.

32. The post-credits reveal seems like it was shot to emulate the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

33. The final moments between the two lovers, when Vision sheds a single tear, is a callback to Avengers #58 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. This was the issue in which Vision officially joins the Avengers.

34. And finally, behold the Scarlet Witch! Damn, that sequence was just cool.
